The toy boxes are both finished and were presented to the elementary school last week!!
Both boxes have 3 safety features. They have springs that prevent the
lids from slamming, wheels that lock in place, and corner protectors
that also cushion the lid when it closes. I'd like to thank all those
who helped, including community members and stores that donated
materials, High Point engineering students for constructing the boxes, special education students for putting hand prints on one of the boxes, art students who designed and painted one of the lids, and my project advisor. Thank you for following my blog and my
journey to earning my Gold Award!

Boxes Assembled
The toy boxes have been assembled by some of High Point’s engineering
students. I have also acquired the help
of a couple of art students who will be creating a design for one of the toy
box lids. The base coat was applied to
them this afternoon and they will be getting a second coat next week.

Diagram
This is a diagram that shows what I want the toy boxes to
look like. Like the Autism Awareness
Ribbon, one of the toy boxes will have a puzzle piece design and that box will
be in a Special Education classroom where children with Autism are taught. The other box will have hand prints and I
plan on working with Special Education classes and one of the younger Girl Scout
troops to accomplish this. The sides of
the toy boxes have been prepared to be assembled and the entire boxes should be
made within the next week.

Introduction
Hi, my name is Kayla Albrecht and I am a senior at High
Point Regional High School in Sussex, New Jersey. I am also a Girl Scout who is
currently working on her Gold Award project.
When I first started to think of project ideas, I thought of ways I
could include my own interests. With my
passion for inspiring others and determination of becoming a teacher one day, I
knew that I wanted to involve one of the local elementary schools in my
project. When I visited the school to
discuss possible projects with the principle, I noticed that the Special
Education classrooms needed more recognition and organization. So, I narrowed my idea to building toy boxes
for Special Education classrooms. With
the guidance from my project advisor, who is an engineering teacher at my
school, along with the help of fellow classmates, I plan on achieving my goal
of gaining awareness and promoting a safe school environment for the special
needs community.
